This is a beautiful look at Nicklin s photography of cetaceans The essays by researchers and others he s worked with lend a simple structure to the book, and Nicklin s description of his career makes the reader want to immediately start rummaging through the National Geographic archives. I LOVED this book I think any whale lover will be captivated by the beautiful pictures and interesting text. While definitely a beautiful coffee table book the pictures are mesmerizing , I enjoyed the narrative and actually read the whole thingsomething I don t normally do with these types of books. With a name like Flip I have to admit I didn t have high hopes for this man s story I was happy to be proven wrong he comes across as a humble helper and observer of whale research and behaviour He has given his life to witnessing the magnificent beasts in a time when people have made amazing developments in their ability to observe whales in their own habitat No longer looking at whales from the deck of a whaling boat, in Nicklin s lifetime better diving equipment, photographic technology, and underwater sound recordings all changed the way humans see whales Fascinating stories and, of course, beautiful photos. Absolutely beautiful I grew up reading the National Geographic The stories that were about the ocean were always my favorites and were pored over.Flip Nicklin is a name that is very familiar to me from that It was great to see the stories behind so many of the famous pictures, as well as enjoy many that were new to me Plus, Christopher Moore recommend this as being the real life inspiration for Fluke Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings.
